Container transshipment at Alat Port has grown by 20%. According to Azerbaijan's Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, measures in recent years to strengthen Alat Port and maritime transport infrastructure have created conditions for seamless and efficient handling of growing transit cargo flows.
The ministry noted that in response to rising demand, the container capacity of Alat Port has been increased from 100,000 to 150,000 TEU, the 7th berth has been commissioned, and a new crane with a lifting capacity of 125 tons has been installed. Currently, the port's annual capacity is 15 million tons. After the completion of the ongoing expansion project, this figure is planned to be increased to 25 million tons, and container capacity to 500,000 TEU.
High demand for port services is confirmed by its performance indicators: last year, more than 8.2 million tons of cargo and 107,000 TEU of containers were transshipped through the Baku International Sea Trade Port.
According to the ministry, another important direction for the development of the Alat transport and logistics hub is the project to build a cargo airport in Alat. The new airport will combine the capabilities of sea, rail, road, and air transport and will become part of a multimodal logistics complex.
"At the same time, the Baku Shipyard continues the construction of four cargo vessels under the first international commercial order to meet growing cargo volumes in the Caspian Sea. In addition, on September 16, 2025, a contract was signed between Baku Shipyard LLC and AD Ports Group for the construction of two container ships with a capacity of 780 TEU each, intended for operation in the Caspian Sea. Also envisaged are a project for a large-tonnage ferry, expansion of Ro-Ro transportation, initiatives implemented jointly with the private sector, and phased fleet renewal. In January-July 2026, container transshipment at Alat Port increased by 20% compared to the same period last year, reaching 72,370 TEU, and general cargo transshipment increased by 82% to 1.4 million tons," the ministry said.
