01
How much is one TEU?
TEU means twenty-foot equivalent unit. Statistics Netherlands, CBS, defines a standard 20-foot container as 1 TEU and a 40-foot container as 2 TEU. Two terminals handling the same number of boxes can therefore report different TEU totals. For non-standard sizes, consult the conversion factors in the particular dataset rather than assuming every container counts as one.
02
A worked example
Imagine a terminal handles 100 twenty-foot containers and 50 forty-foot containers in a month. That is 150 physical boxes, but 100 × 1 + 50 × 2 = 200 TEU. These are illustrative numbers, not Baku Port statistics. The calculation says nothing about cargo weight, which requires a separate measure.
150 containers but 200 TEU: an illustration| Size | Physical containers | TEU equivalent |
|---|
| 20 feet | 100 | 100 |
|---|
| 40 feet | 50 | 100 |
|---|
| Total | 150 | 200 |
|---|
03
Capacity is not throughput
Design capacity describes what a terminal is intended to handle over a stated period under specified conditions. Actual throughput is what it handled. If an illustrative terminal has annual capacity of 200,000 TEU and annual throughput of 120,000 TEU, the ratio is 60%. Calling that precise technical utilisation requires matching definitions. A bottleneck in one part of the terminal can coexist with spare capacity elsewhere.
04
Empty containers and repeated handling
The World Bank’s UNCTAD-based indicator includes empty containers. Transshipment at an intermediate port counts two lifts: unloading and then loading onto another vessel. Port throughput therefore does not count unique consignments. This describes that international statistical series; do not automatically assume every port press release follows it. Check what the publisher included before comparing totals.

Start with the reporting period: a month, January–September or a full year. Next identify the unit and comparison base. TEU can rise with an unchanged box count if the size mix changes. Higher throughput alone does not establish higher Azerbaijani exports, because the freight could be imports or transit cargo. That conclusion needs a directional breakdown and information about the goods.

What a business needs beyond TEU
Route selection also requires delivery times and their variability, departure frequency, handling and storage charges, and customs clearance time. Check onward rail and road availability. Record throughput describes a flow; it does not promise a quicker or cheaper trip for your particular container. A useful assessment combines volume with time, cost and reliability rather than treating one record as a verdict on the route.
