Two major machinery and equipment chapters accounted for $3.08 billion of Azerbaijan’s imports in January-September 2026, or approximately 23.1% of total merchandise imports.

Two broad categories
Chapter 84, covering mechanical machinery, boilers and machine parts, contributed $1.58 billion. Chapter 85, including electrical machinery and equipment as well as sound and image recording and reproduction apparatus, totalled $1.49 billion.
| Indicator | Imports by commodity group, US$ million |
|---|---|
| Machinery, chapter 84 | 1,583.71 |
| Electrical goods, chapter 85 | 1,494.32 |
Exports were much smaller
Exports in the same chapters were $43.10 million and $44.86 million respectively. The gap demonstrates the scale of external purchases, but does not by itself measure the technological sophistication of the economy.
Not all imports are investment
These broad categories combine industrial equipment, components and consumer products. The full $3.08 billion should therefore not be described as factory modernisation. That assessment requires more detailed commodity codes and information about the purpose of purchases.
