Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) continues design and construction work within the Zangezur Corridor project.
According to ADY, reconstruction of the railway network in Nakhchivan is ongoing, with construction work underway on the first 7-kilometer section from the Azerbaijan-Armenia border towards Ordubad.
The first stage of design and construction work, which began in late 2025, covers the sections of Salammelik, Ordubad, Aza, and Julfa.
Currently, earthworks have been completed on a 6-kilometer section, and new rail-sleeper frames have been installed on a 700-meter section starting from Salammelik station. After reconstruction is completed, the annual freight capacity of the railway will be 15 million tons.
The reconstructed railway network of Nakhchivan will be connected to the Zangezur Corridor from the Ordubad side, and the Horadiz-Agbend railway line from the main part of Azerbaijan.
This will create direct railway communication between the main part of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. At the same time, this route will provide direct railway communication with Turkey.
In accordance with the agreements reached on August 8, 2025, in Washington, the restoration of railway communication along the Zangezur Corridor is envisaged within the framework of creating the 'Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity' (TRIPP). Currently, work continues on other sections: 60% of work has been completed on the Alyat-Osmanli line, and 73% on the Horadiz-Agbend line.
The new transport link will expand the capabilities of the Middle Corridor, contribute to the growth of freight traffic between Europe and Asia, and strengthen access to Turkish and European markets, which will increase Azerbaijan's transit potential. In addition, the Zangezur Corridor will be of strategic importance for ensuring connectivity with the North-South transport route.
