The United States has imposed sanctions on 36 individuals and legal entities linked to Iran's aviation sector, according to a statement on the US Department of the Treasury's website.
The sanctions were imposed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) as part of Operation Economic Outcast. The department claims these individuals support Tehran in transporting weapons, personnel, and illegal cargo.
Specifically, OFAC added 27 Iranian airlines to the sanctions list, including Iran Air Tour, Iran Aseman Airlines, Kish Airlines, Qeshm Air, Saha Airlines, Sepehran Airlines, Varesh Airlines, and Zagros Airlines.
"Today we fulfilled our promise by imposing sanctions on companies that continue to support Mahan Air. Let this serve as a warning to all who do business with the remaining Iranian airlines - you risk being cut off from the global financial system," said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
OFAC also imposed sanctions on companies from third countries that, according to the American side, facilitate Mahan Air's activities related to weapons proliferation, operations involving terrorist organizations, and the illegal procurement of American-made aircraft.
Additionally, the US suspended three authorizations related to Iran's aviation. These concerned the right to overfly Iranian territory and the ability of foreign airlines to operate flights to Iran using commercial aircraft of American manufacture or under US control.
