US President Donald Trump has said he is ready to increase sanctions pressure on Russia at any moment if Washington and Moscow fail to reach an agreement on settling the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

As FinFly reports, the American leader made the statement to journalists when asked why he had declined to impose new restrictions under a law drafted at the initiative of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

"I have the right to do it at any moment. Immediately. So if it doesn't work, I can always do it," Trump said.

The US president explained that for now he does not intend to introduce additional sanctions because Washington is continuing negotiations with Moscow.

"When you are negotiating, you don't do that," he stressed.

The American leader also noted that most of his fellow Republicans understand the decision not to apply new sanctions measures for now.

"I explain my position to Republicans who are opposed, but there are few of them, because they trust me," Trump added.
