The United States should not make hasty decisions on regulating artificial intelligence (AI), and must find a balance between oversight and support for innovation. This was stated by US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson on CNN.
"If Congress rushes and convenes an emergency session to regulate AI, we will lose the race to China, and that poses a threat to every American. So we need to find a balance and keep our finger on the pulse," Johnson said.
In his view, it is important not to allow panic around this topic.
"We need to manage this new technology the same way we did with other technologies in the past, and make sure we do everything possible and act responsibly, without stifling American innovation. These tasks must be addressed simultaneously," the speaker noted.
At the same time, Johnson emphasized that unlike regulation in the field of nuclear energy and nuclear weapons, the US does not have decades to create the necessary system for AI.
"If you compare this to other major technological breakthroughs, such as nuclear energy, issues of nuclear war and nuclear weapons, it took decades to create all the regulatory and oversight bodies, various councils and international partnerships. In the case of AI, we don't have that much time," he said.
Johnson also noted that despite calls from a number of companies to urgently address this issue, there is "no consensus" among them on how to solve the problem.
