A group of plaintiffs has filed a lawsuit in the Northern District of California against US companies Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and SpaceXAI, accusing them of colluding to slow the development of artificial intelligence (AI).
The lawsuit challenges an alleged agreement among the four leading AI companies to reduce the pace of improvement of competing products offered to consumers.
The plaintiffs noted that shortly after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an article on the need to slow the development of advanced AI models, he was joined in that view by competitors — SpaceXAI founder Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis.
"The agreement restricts competition in matters of model development, product quality, innovation, investment, production and the timing of new capabilities," the plaintiffs argue.
They are represented by the law firm Trial Lawyers for Justice.
