On October 14, 2026, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics released inflation data for September. According to the report, the consumer price index (CPI) rose to 3.7% year-on-year, up from 3.4% a month earlier. Analysts had forecast 3.6%.
On a monthly basis, inflation was 0.6%, following 0.4% in August. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 2.6% year-on-year, up from 2.4% a month earlier.
The main driver of the acceleration was higher energy prices. In September, gasoline prices jumped 9.1%, accounting for more than half of the monthly increase in the overall index. Energy prices rose 5.2% overall, while housing costs increased 0.4%.
