A new well at the Magtymguly gas field in Turkmenistan's sector of the Caspian Sea is producing more than 1.3 million cubic meters of commercial natural gas per day, according to a statement by the state concern Turkmennebit published on August 10.
The statement said that the production well A8 also yields about 130 tons of gas condensate per day. The well was drilled to a depth of 4,981 meters at the Toplum-1 contract area. Initial well completion work is ongoing, and production volumes are expected to increase further.
The work is carried out under a production sharing agreement between Malaysia's PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd. and Turkmennebit. The statement emphasized that special attention is paid to international cooperation in developing licensed offshore blocks in Turkmenistan's Caspian sector.
Turkmennebit added that over the past 30 years, five offshore platforms have been built and about 40 exploration, appraisal, and production wells have been drilled in Turkmenistan's Caspian sector and coastal zone. As a result of joint efforts, more than 44 billion cubic meters of gas and 16 million tons of liquid hydrocarbons have been produced in the area. The next phase of cooperation includes the development of offshore blocks No. 19 and 20, as well as 2D seismic surveys on blocks No. 11, 12, 13, and 14.
Meanwhile, Turkmenistan's Caspian sector has become an important part of the country's efforts to expand and diversify its hydrocarbon resource base. Unlike the country's large onshore gas fields, offshore projects are developed in cooperation with international partners under production sharing agreements, highlighting the importance of foreign investment and technology for developing more complex resources.
Malaysia's PETRONAS is one of Turkmenistan's longest-standing foreign partners in the offshore sector. The company has been operating in the country for 30 years and participates in hydrocarbon production in Turkmenistan's Caspian sector, including the development of offshore infrastructure, as well as a gas processing plant and terminal in Kiyanly.
A new stage of partnership began in June 2026 with the signing of a production sharing agreement for offshore blocks No. 19 and 20 and a cooperation agreement for 2D seismic surveys on northern offshore blocks. According to PETRONAS, the new agreements aim to expand its exploration and production portfolio, improve subsurface knowledge, and identify new opportunities for geological exploration.
