South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to change the email addresses of all diplomats following a personal data leak caused by a hack of the online training system of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA).
The hacker gained access to the academy's server, but the breach went unnoticed for about 10 months — from April last year to February this year. The system stored data on approximately 10,000 people, including names, user IDs, job titles, email addresses, and encrypted passwords. Most of this data is believed to have been compromised.
The ministry fears the leak could lead to phishing attacks and other cybercrimes. The ministry was unaware of the breach until February, when it was reported by another government agency.
The online education system has been shut down. An investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the leak.
