Freight traffic along the Middle Corridor (the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route) will reach 5.5 million tonnes in 2026. This was stated by Fariz Aliyev, Head of the Transport Policy Department at the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, at the German-Azerbaijani Conference in Baku.

"According to our forecasts, total transit freight traffic this year will exceed 16 million tonnes, with 5.5 million tonnes accounted for by the Middle Corridor," Aliyev noted.

As the ministry representative explained, the increase in shipment volumes is linked to the systematic launch of container trains along this route, as well as intensive improvements to transport infrastructure in the region. In particular, since the beginning of the year, around 600 regular container trains (block trains) have been dispatched from China.

Aliyev emphasised that Azerbaijan is carrying out comprehensive work to upgrade and expand the capacity of strategically important logistics facilities. The throughput capacity of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line has been brought to 5 million tonnes per year, and the capacity of the Baku International Sea Port is planned to be increased from the current 15 million tonnes to 25 million tonnes by 2030.
