Iran advocates taking a logical step regarding the Strait of Hormuz. This was stated today by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei at a press conference in Tehran.
"Iran has repeatedly noted that it does not want to put its logical and far-sighted steps in an uncertain position because of the ill-considered actions of others. Iran and Oman, as two coastal states, have made a decision on an issue concerning the Strait of Hormuz. An agreement has been reached on a single text. Currently, Iran and Oman want to hold a meeting with the participation of regional countries to develop a logical and far-sighted strategy and present their agreements," he said.
Baghaei stated that the agreement reached between Iran and Oman notes that the determination of safe routes falls within the competence of coastal states. The document also provides for respect for sovereign rights.
According to him, all aspects of the issue were determined after a week of discussions between the two countries, and this very issue was to be central at the meeting with the participation of neighboring states.
"If neighboring countries, despite Iran expressing dissatisfaction with the actions of some countries, want to gather together and hold negotiations on creating a safe region without the participation of external players, then this was a very suitable opportunity," he noted.
