Alstom has secured a key authorisation for the first Grand Central Class 180 train retrofitted with ETCS train-control equipment. The company announced the milestone on October 22.
Software updates and reliability running are planned next. The fleet is expected to begin ETCS Level 2 operation between Welwyn and Hitchin on the East Coast Main Line in spring 2027.
The approval should not be read as an immediate switch of every train to the new operating mode. Technical authorisation, reliability testing and regular operation are separate stages.
For passengers, digital modernisation does not always mean a new train. Here, existing rolling stock is receiving a control-system upgrade. Its eventual impact should be judged through service performance after deployment, not through approval alone.
