The construction of a new airport in Astana is a megaproject that typically takes at least five years to implement, Deputy Minister of Transport of Kazakhstan Talgat Lastayev told journalists on the sidelines of ICAO Security Week 2026.
"A project of this level, it's a megaproject, as a rule, construction takes from 5 years. Therefore, I think that within these horizons it is a very good result," he said.
The deputy minister noted that the authorities intend to push the project forward as quickly as possible in order to upgrade the capital's aviation infrastructure. Currently, a feasibility study and design and estimate documentation are being developed as part of the project, and survey work is underway.
Lastayev recalled that a month ago, the Astana akimat, the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan and Changi Airports International (CAI) signed a framework cooperation agreement for the construction of the new airport. The parties also agreed to cooperate on the development of the existing international airport in Astana, including the possible participation of CAI in its management and operations.
Changi Airports International is a subsidiary of the state-owned Changi Airport Group (CAG) and implements international projects at more than 90 airports in 35 countries.
