Who counts as a freelancer or self-employed
A freelancer earns income from their own services without being on a company payroll. In Azerbaijan this income can be handled as an individual entrepreneur (fərdi sahibkar) or, for certain activities, under a simplified self-employment regime. The right choice depends on your work, clients and turnover.
Main registration options
The first route is registering as an individual entrepreneur: an official status that lets you invoice and work with companies. The second is a simplified regime for specific categories. The State Tax Service publishes the exact list of available regimes and the conditions to use them.
How to find your rate
Your rate and how it is calculated depend on the chosen regime and activity. Do not rely on figures from old articles — they change. Always check the current rate and thresholds in your taxes.gov.az account or the official tax calculator.
Reporting and payments
Once registered you must file declarations and pay tax and mandatory contributions on time. Most of this is done online through the taxpayer cabinet and the e-gov.az portal, with no office visit.
Common mistakes
Working undeclared, missing filing deadlines, mixing personal and business inflows, and relying on outdated online rates. Set up the right regime and a payment calendar once, and you remove almost all the risk.
