The United States used the promise of providing Armenia with access to advanced Nvidia chips to achieve a preliminary peace agreement with Azerbaijan. The Wall Street Journal reported this on September 4.
"According to participants in the negotiations, American negotiators used the promise of access to Nvidia chips for artificial intelligence to cement the preliminary peace agreement reached last year between Armenia and Azerbaijan," the publication said.
American negotiators proposed expanding chip purchase permits for the Armenian Firebird data center project. According to the newspaper, access to artificial intelligence technologies became one of the incentives for Yerevan's participation in the peace initiative.
The WSJ called this approach an example of so-called chip diplomacy — the use of access to advanced technologies as a foreign policy tool. As part of the deal, the US also proposed creating a transport corridor through Armenia that would connect Azerbaijan with its exclave of Nakhchivan — the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP).
