Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) has fined Google €403 million for violations in processing user location data.
Under data protection rules, location information must be processed lawfully, fairly and transparently.
The DPC said its investigation found violations by Google. In particular, users may not have known that their location data was being used, including for showing ads or determining their interests. This could have limited their control over their personal data.
The investigation was launched by the Data Protection Commission in February 2020 following complaints from several European consumer protection organisations regarding Google's processing of location data in connection with certain services and products.
The Data Protection Commission imposed fines totalling €403 million and ordered Google to bring its payment processing system into compliance with the requirements within six months.
