Volkswagen, Deutsche Telekom, Unikie and research institute BIBA have concluded a two-year automated vehicle-logistics project in Emden, Telekom announced on 28 October.

The trials combined a public 5G network, edge computing and Unikie’s vehicle-marshalling system. Tested scenarios included a roundabout and interaction between automated and conventionally driven vehicles at a logistics site.

Germany’s federal transport ministry supported the project. The announcement concerns trial results rather than a mass commercial rollout. Reliable connectivity, safe mixed traffic and site operations remain central to moving such systems into routine use.
