Anthropic is transferring the open Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation. The company announced the move on October 22.
Skills package task instructions with supporting files for AI agents. Anthropic says more than 70 platforms support the format. Contributing to it does not require foundation membership.
Neutral governance matters to businesses that want to avoid tying their operational instructions to one AI supplier. A shared format, however, does not mean that every skill will behave identically across different environments.
Security remains a separate issue. Third-party instructions and scripts need review before use. An open standard can improve portability without making every downloaded package trustworthy or suitable for access to business systems.
