Apple's announcement of new smartphones, including the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, is set for September 9. Detailed information about the upcoming devices continues to leak online. According to MacRumors, descriptions of five camera features that could be included in the new Pro models have been found in the code of the iOS 27 beta.
It is important to note that none of the features discussed below are currently available to users of the current beta versions of the system—at least on current-generation devices. Moreover, it is not certain that all features will be available on the iPhone 18 Pro at launch.
- Exposure waveforms. The camera will be able to display histograms and/or waveforms for more precise light assessment. A histogram shows the distribution of dark, light, and mid-tones. A waveform aligns this data to specific areas of the frame.
- Overexposure warning. In the preview window, a mode will highlight edges of objects in sharp focus with a colored outline (focus peaking). Overexposed areas of the image will be highlighted with a solid color, diagonal stripes, or a checkerboard pattern.
- Burst self-timer shots. The company will add the ability to take multiple consecutive shots at a set interval, rather than just one. After each such shot, the countdown restarts immediately, not after the photo is saved. This allows for taking shots one after another.
- Manual focus. Manual focus setting and locking without autofocus will be introduced—similar to Final Cut Camera. A similar slider was removed in iOS betas, but the code remains. The company has limited the functionality of the focus lock: it will only be available on devices that come with iOS 27 (or later) out of the box—on current models, the feature likely will not work.
- Aperture-based image correction. Algorithms will be able to remove lens distortions depending on the current aperture, using up to four reference points for image smoothing. This feature further proves the presence of a variable aperture in the iPhone 18 Pro.
