British parents are increasingly turning away from electronic devices as Christmas gifts for their children, opting instead for construction sets, board games and classic toys. Sales of screen-free products are rising amid concerns about the impact of technology on the younger generation.
Major UK retailers have already noted the shift. For example, all ten toys in The Entertainer's Christmas ranking are screen-free. A similar situation is seen in Hamleys' holiday selection, which includes 15 popular items.
Among the favourites are Lego and Meccano construction sets, play kitchens, interactive plush animals and creative kits. Store representatives say adults are increasingly looking for entertainment that helps children take a break from smartphones and tablets.
Search statistics proved particularly telling. Over the past year, interest in the search phrases "screen-free toys" and "how to reduce screen time" has grown by more than 5,000%, according to The Entertainer.
Smyths Toys also confirms the trend, pointing to increased demand for board games, art sets and construction kits. Shoppers are choosing activities that the whole family can enjoy, while also introducing children to the pastimes of their own childhood.
