What the trade balance measures

Updated: 1 view

The trade balance is exports minus imports for the same period. Check whether the release covers goods alone or services too.

Two calculations

Illustration: exports of 12 and imports of 9 give a +3 balance and turnover of 21. These are not Azerbaijan statistics.

A broader account

The current account also includes income and current transfers. A goods surplus does not determine its total.

Compare consistently

Match period, currency and coverage. Higher export value can reflect prices rather than greater physical volume.
