Italian company Saipem has signed a contract with the Netherlands' Subsea Cable Assets (SCA) as part of a major energy project in the Caspian Sea.

As the company reported on September 24, this is SCA's first contract with Saipem Contracting Netherlands BV. The contract value is about $20 million. It covers engineering, manufacturing of specialised equipment, its installation and operation, dismantling and restoration to support a large offshore energy project in the Caspian region.

The company did not disclose the name of the project.

It is reported that under the contract, SCA will supply five cable transport carousels with a lifting capacity of 1,100 tonnes each, as well as associated cable handling equipment. The equipment will be used to load cable in the UK and subsequently transport it towards Azerbaijan.

"SCA will manage the entire operation — from equipment supply to its deployment on site, ensuring a single coordinated campaign," SCA said in a statement.

The company noted that production of the cable carousels and associated equipment is currently underway at SCA's manufacturing facility in Dubai. Their shipment to Europe is planned before the end of this year.

"This multi-million-dollar contract with Saipem demonstrates our team's expertise in delivering complex cable transport and service projects, built on the significant experience we have accumulated in recent years," said SCA Chief Operating Officer Sil de Raike.

According to him, the combination of the company's operational experience with its capabilities in spooling and equipment manufacturing allows SCA to ensure safe and timely delivery of the project.
