Russia hopes for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of sanctions on Iran. This was stated on October 1 by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the plenary session of the XXIII annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

"We are against any aggression, we are in favor of resolving all issues peacefully, through agreements. And we hope that the Strait will be opened, that sanctions will be lifted, which Iran is seeking, justly seeking. Sanctions will be lifted from Iran," he said.

According to the president, a fair lifting of restrictions on Tehran would completely eliminate the need to impose any bans on the movement of civilian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea area.

Addressing the topic of Iran's nuclear program, the Russian leader recalled Moscow's significant contribution to the creation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Putin noted that Russia's initiative to remove part of the enriched uranium to Russian territory remains in force. The president added that all parties had previously agreed to this proposal, but the subsequent toughening of the US position, which demanded that the material be transported only to its own territory, led to a similarly firm refusal from the Iranian partners, as stated during a personal meeting by the now-deceased special envoy Ali Larijani.
