Global installed onshore wind capacity is forecast to rise by more than 70% to 2,040 GW by 2031, according to the International Energy Agency's Renewables 2026 report.

Across renewable technologies, the agency expects almost 4,800 GW of additions in 2026-2031. Solar PV accounts for more than three-quarters of the overall expansion.

Grid and storage requirements

Renewables' share of global electricity generation is expected to increase from 33% in 2025 to almost 45% in 2031. Integrating additional plants requires grid expansion, storage and more flexible demand.

In the main scenario, total renewable capacity reaches about 9,710 GW in 2030, or 2.6 times its 2022 level. That remains below the global goal of tripling capacity by the end of the decade.

The 2,040 GW figure measures installed onshore wind capacity, not annual electricity output. Figures for 2030-2031 are projections rather than results already achieved.
