Client assets at Azerbaijan’s investment firms fell 18% in the first half of 2026, while sector profit rose 60% year on year. The divergence reflects different measures of the business and different comparison periods.
Two measures, two comparison periods
The CBA Financial Stability Report for the first half of 2026 puts client assets at AZN 2,111 million, down from AZN 2,583 million at end-2025. The AZN 472 million decline, roughly 18%, compares asset values at two reporting dates. It is not a measure of investment firms’ revenue.
Net profit measures performance over a period. First-half profit increased from AZN 1.5 million in 2025 to AZN 2.4 million in 2026. Smaller client portfolios and higher earnings can therefore coexist, but the contrast does not establish a causal link.

Portfolio size is not revenue
The CBA attributes profit mainly to income from client orders and portfolio management. Earnings depend on transactions throughout the period, the mix of services and pricing, as well as assets at the reporting date.
Order activity may persist even when portfolio values fall. The report does not provide each firm’s fees or service-level revenue, so it cannot establish that higher charges or client asset sales caused the profit increase.
| Measure | Comparison base | H1 2026 / June |
|---|---|---|
| Client assets, AZN m | 2,583 at end-2025 | 2,111 |
| Net profit, AZN m | 1.5 in H1 2025 | 2.4 |
| Own assets, AZN m | 121 at end-2025 | 123 |
| Liabilities, AZN m | 64 at end-2025 | 70 |
The firms’ own balance sheets
Investment firms’ own assets rose from AZN 121 million to AZN 123 million, while liabilities increased from AZN 64 million to AZN 70 million. These balances must not be added to client assets: they describe different measures.
The business question is whether firms can convert income into profit while retaining capital. The sector remained profitable, but growth from a low base does not yet demonstrate sustained acceleration. The next report will show whether returns held up and client portfolios recovered in the second half.
