Digital ruble accounts are currently available to citizens aged 18 and over. The regulator is working to expand the age category and make this option available to teenagers aged 14 to 18.
The digital ruble is the third form of Russia's national currency, alongside cash and non-cash money. The Central Bank launched the digital currency pilot project in August 2023. On September 1, 2026, a broader implementation phase began: the largest banks and major retail companies connected to them started conducting digital ruble transactions.
The Bank of Russia expects that within five to seven years the digital ruble will become a familiar tool for everyday payments.
