British Mercedes driver George Russell's victory at the 15th round of the current Formula 1 season — the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku — has entered the top 10 closest finishes in the history of the sport. The race's press service reported this.
The Briton beat second-placed Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) by a margin of 0.196 seconds, making it the closest finish in the championship since 2002.
Overall, Russell's win in Baku ranks tenth in the list of closest finishes in Formula 1 history.
Ninth on that list is the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix, where winner Michael Schumacher finished just 0.182 seconds ahead of second-placed Rubens Barrichello.
The record was set at the 1971 Italian Grand Prix, when Peter Gethin beat Ronnie Peterson by 0.010 seconds.
