President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has ordered close oversight of Kazakhstan’s nuclear energy development following his October 22 meeting with Atomic Energy Agency chairman Almasadam Satkaliyev.

The discussions covered nuclear power plant construction, workforce training and local participation in industry projects. Radioactive waste management and the creation of the Semipalatinsk nuclear safety zone were also addressed.

The programme creates economic tasks beyond building a plant: specialist workers, suppliers and safe operating arrangements are needed. The statement did not provide a new plant commissioning date.
