According to The Wall Street Journal, during indirect talks Washington offered Tehran to drop plans to introduce a fee for passage through the Strait of Hormuz and control over the route in exchange for unfreezing $100 billion in Iranian assets held abroad.
According to the newspaper, US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner this week in Doha discussed with Qatari mediators ways to break the deadlock and implement the preliminary agreement reached last month to open the strait.
At the same time, WSJ sources said both US and Iranian delegations discussed in Qatar the recent hostilities in Lebanon, which have complicated the situation.
According to the publication, Iran wants to charge each vessel crossing the strait a fee in exchange for providing services, but "instead, negotiators are considering an alternative proposal from Oman, which has rights to the southern part of the strait, under which maritime services would be paid through a fund financed by voluntary contributions."
