Sanctions against Russia, which the late US Senator Lindsey Graham advocated for, could lead to negative consequences primarily for the United States itself. This was reported on August 4 by the online magazine Responsible Statecraft.
The authors of the publication believe that new restrictions could increase economic instability in the US and lead to a decline in Washington's geopolitical influence due to the growing number of countries seeking alternatives to the use of the dollar.
According to the journalists, the attempt to influence Russia through sanctions may also fail to produce the expected result. As noted in the article, such measures could only strengthen Moscow's resolve and complicate the process of settling the conflict in Ukraine.
Political scientist and retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Earl Rasmussen said on July 30 that the sanctions bill against Russia would lead to a new round of trade war with China. In his words, such measures would not force India and China to reduce purchases of Russian oil, but rather push them away from the West.
Furthermore, this could hit the Global South countries, which would cooperate even more actively with Beijing, which offers more attractive technologies without additional conditions.
