Private equity fund Apollo Global Management has reached an agreement to acquire British airline easyJet Plc, valuing the company at £5.7 billion ($7.7 billion).
According to a joint press release, Apollo will pay 715 pence per easyJet share. The low-cost carrier's board of directors has unanimously recommended that shareholders accept the investment firm's offer.
Earlier on Thursday, another potential buyer, American investment company Castlelake LP, announced it was abandoning further attempts to purchase the airline. Castlelake had offered 690 pence per easyJet share.
easyJet was founded in 1995 and listed on the stock exchange in 2000. The company's fleet exceeds 300 aircraft, and it serves over 1,000 routes in more than 30 countries.
easyJet shares rose 2.8% in London trading on Friday. Since the beginning of the year, its market capitalization has increased by 31.2%.
