In recent months, social media have seen an increase in cases of aggressive behavior and crimes committed by minors. Videos of fights, bullying, humiliation, and risky challenges spread rapidly, forming a worrying trend. Against this backdrop, a number of countries are already considering or introducing restrictions on the use of social media by children under 15.
FinFly News analysis shows that the rise in aggression among teenagers is the result of several factors overlapping and reinforcing each other.
Family environment: a key source of risk. International studies confirm that the family environment remains the main factor in shaping a child's behavior. Lack of attention, emotional support, and parental involvement creates conditions in which a teenager seeks recognition in the digital environment. Social media become a substitute for communication, and aggressive actions a way to attract attention, get a reaction, and assert oneself.
Weakening of social control: In recent years, the role of school and extracurricular institutions in upbringing has noticeably declined. Children spend more time without adults, and traditional forms of socialization, such as sports, clubs, and neighborhood communities, are losing influence. As a result, control over adolescent behavior effectively shifts to social media algorithms, which promote content that evokes strong emotions. Most often, these are negative and aggressive materials.
Access to violent content: Teenagers have unlimited access to videos of violence, bullying, criminal episodes, and dangerous challenges. Moreover, the neuropsychology of adolescence makes them particularly vulnerable:
- brain areas responsible for self-control are not yet fully formed;
- reaction to risk and shock is stronger;
- ability to assess consequences is reduced.
Violent content becomes not just entertainment; it shapes behavioral patterns.
Peer pressure and audience effect: Social media amplify group dynamics. Teenagers strive to meet the expectations of their environment, and aggressive videos are often perceived as a way to "make a statement." The public nature and virality of content create a competitive effect: whoever makes a bolder or more violent video gets more attention.
Why are countries introducing age restrictions? World practice shows that restrictions for children under 15 are introduced for several reasons:
- rise in cyberbullying;
- increase in crimes committed for content;
- deterioration of adolescents' mental health;
- addiction to social media.
France, the United States, South Korea, and a number of other countries are already discussing or implementing legislative measures restricting children's access to social platforms.
Aggression among minors is a complex problem in which the digital environment has become the main accelerator. Social media do not create aggression but amplify it, turning isolated cases into mass phenomena. Without a systemic approach, from family upbringing to regulation of the digital environment, the trend will persist and intensify.
